According to a new poll from Rasmussen Reports, Republicans who were asked to name the leader of their party cited Sen. John McCain and RNC Chairman Michael Steele equally — both had 5 percent.
Conversely, a whopping 68 percent of GOPers said their party had no leader. Another 17 percent were undecided.
That means that roughly 85 percent of conservatives believe they are leaderless — just six weeks after their party lost control of the Executive Branch after eight years and two years after it controlled the Legislative Branch for most of the previous 12 years.
The party’s de facto leader, “Boss” Rush Limbaugh, was named as the actual party boss by just 2 percent in the poll, while Gov. Sarah Palin received 1 percent.
At the bottom of the list, congressional bigwigs Sen. Mitch McConnell, the Senate Minority Leader, and Rep. John Boehner, Minority Leader in the House both received less than one-half of 1 percent.
Glaringly absent from the list was George Bush, the party’s leader until January.
Among Democrats, Pres. Obama was seen as the party’s leader by 66 percent, while 4 percent named Speaker Nancy Pelosi and 2 percent said Sen. Ted Kennedy.
Interestingly, comedian Jon Stewart was named leader of the Democratic Party by 1 percent of Democrats — which means Stewart is tied on the left with Gov. Palin on the right.
The poll also offered proof that Democrats understand Republicans better than Republicans know themselves. Seven percent of Democrats named Boss Limbaugh as the Republican Party’s leader.
Liberals and Democrats seem to be very quick to forget that we were in the same position just 4 years ago. With everyone looking around saying “what can we do to take back control?” 2 years later Dems took congress and 2 years after that they have complete control. Now you could say that GOP incompetence led to this or you could say that the American public is rather fickle. In any case liberals and Dems shouldn’t get too comfortable, no matter how bad the GOP looks now they can still make a comeback in coming years. Especially if a few things don’t go the right way for Obama. This is only a temporary victory.

Man, I seem to remember a race for president that started earlier than any I can ever remember, and crowded with like 9 candidates.
It will be interesting to see who the GOP comes up with as a sacrificial lamb in 2012.
