Two months ago we thought we were rid of Cindy Sheehan, whose well-intentioned anti-war activities were rendered virtually meaningless by her own personality and her poorly chosen associations. In May Sheehan said she was quitting the peace movement and retreating from public life to mend her health and personal life.
Unfortunately, she’s back and yacking at the media again.
Now, the mother of a soldier killed in Iraq is threatening to challenge the speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives in the 2008 elections unless Nancy Pelosi files articles of impeachment against President George W. Bush within the next two weeks. Ooh, I’ll bet Nancy’s just quaking in her Prada heels.
“I think all politicians should be held accountable,” Sheehan told The Associated Press on Sunday. “Democrats and Americans feel betrayed by the Democratic leadership. We hired them to bring an end to the war.”
While Sheehan does have a point that the Democratic leadership has rendered the term “Democratic leadership” an oxymoron, the thought of Sheehan running for Pelosi’s seat in Congress is absurd. Granted, Pelosi has had her blond moments since becoming House speaker, but she has a track record that trumps Sheehan’s “name recognition,” which Sheehan says is her strong suit.
While I would never belittle Sheehan’s loss of her son or deny her right to protest against the war in Iraq, I think she would be doing the peace movement, the impeachment movement and all of us a favor if she would just quietly fade away. And stay away.
You render any peace or progressive movement weaker by deciding you are better qualified to speak for peace or progressive values than someone else.
Shouldn’t we progressives be more about inclusivness than ugly in-fighting?
Cindy, has the right to speak what she feels. She is only reminding the Congress what was promised to the American voters. I only hope she will be a little more patient, so we can all see this thru. I feel certain that she is bothered still by her son’s death, and very hurt – I would be, she is probably more hurt about the lies and deceit that caused his death – I would be. This war should never have been. So let’s be patient with Cindy because she has every right to be angry. Every one that read this post, just take a moment and pretend you’re Cindy. Just think if you were wearing her shoes!!!!!
It always amazes me when one “American” tries to silence another American. If you do not like a candidate, vote for their opponent. If you are not in the political district, then you really should let those who are decide the issue. If we have citizens in uniform laying down their lives for us…to protect free speech, then honor that fact. Stating a disagreement with someone in the public sphere is in the spiritof free speech, telling them WHERE TO GO is not.

I’d like to defend the Democrats in Congress, by pointing out that the Republicans in the Senate have stopped nearly everything progressives wanted. It still takes 60 votes to bring a bill onto the floor, and 60 votes to convict an impeached President! The 50-49 Democratic margin is razor thin; remember that Joe Lieberman “caucuses” with the Democrats, but votes for the war! And wants war with Iran! Until Senator Tim Johnson recovers from his brain aneurysm, it will be very hard to push anything through the Senate. Don’t blame the Democratic leadership. Blame the people who steal elections and pad votes for Republicans.

Uhh, could you be more precise about Pelosi’s vaunted track record?
The record i’m thinking of is the one, that she stated as soon as the Dems took over Congress, that “Impeachment is off the table.”
Another jewel: At the urging of AIPAC, she removed the provision from a funding bill that would require HRM, King George, to seek approval before bombing Iran.
Or how about her track record of voting for torture?
Or, her refusal to try and dismantle the onerous Patriot Act?
Pelosi’s got a record alright. One that should help her retire in 2008 and serve her true masters, the demented Zionist regime of Israel.
Cindy should have kept her son out of the army if she wanted her son to live a normal life. Her son chose his path, so she should accept the consequences. We mourn each death but they died for our freedom. They sacrificed so we can live, as those did in WW2. Mourn then move on…please.
