Increase in the cigarette tax rate leads to a 2.5% reduction in the respiratory-cancer death rate, or some 3,922 deaths annually in the U.S., according to a study led by Southern Illinois University. For unclear reasons, however, higher cigarette taxation leads to higher mortality rates in Alaska, Florida, Hawaii, and Texas.
