Say what you will, but I think John Edwards has it right.
America needs leaders who understand that the country needs to be inspired again, former Sen. John Edwards said Friday.
Edwards gets that Americans like you and me are…better than snarky rich idiots who act like assholes because they know deep down inside no amount of money or external success makes up for the fact they are small, nasty peopleEdwards said that after Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast, Americans reached out to volunteer and take families into their homes.
“It says something about the heart and character of our country,” said Edwards, a Democrat. “What we need is we need leaders who tap into that.”
Ain’t it the truth? Full disclosure: I voted for Edwards in the Florida primary in 2004, even though the press and my party had already given the state to Kerry. I see something in him that I saw in Carter and in Clinton, and it’s not just the Southern thing, although “not for nothin’,” as we say down here.
Edwards now heads the Center for Poverty, Work and Opportunity at the University of North Carolina law school and has previously said he has not decided whether he will run for president in 2008…
“The people I’ve met, they violate every stereotype that exists about people who are struggling,” Edwards said.
He said the great moral issue in the country today is that 37 million people live in poverty.
“They have never had a champion,” Edwards said. “They can’t even imagine someone actually being willing to speak up for them.”
Contrast Edwards’ remarks with those of former First Lady Barbara Bush, who in the wake of the most devastating natural disaster of our times looked on her idea of the bright side for the evacuees:
And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this is working very well for them. They are faring far better than before Katrina.

We need the opportunity to chose our leaders and representatives. The evidence is overwhelming that our election system does not allow that outcome. Between poorly trained election workers, flawed partisan owned technology and states officers with deep conflicts of interest, a national GOP plan for disenfranchisemnt of voters for their political opponents, and election proof gerrymandering this isn’t happening. Our elections don’t meet international standards for fairness.
The consequence of rigged elecitons is that Americans are not represented. Seventy per cent of Americans favor a liberal agenda and international co-operation. These views are not supported by Congress, the White House or the Judicial Branch.
Poverty is an inherent part of the sort of capitalism we practice. All the profits go to owners. We do not own our work and cannot benefit from it. Either you reform capitalism to allow better distribution of profits or you allow government to mitigate the inequality.
Our non-representative government will not mitigate and the powerful owners who are temporarily benefitting from the status quo will not reform.
There is no country on the planet that has the income distribution we have that has avoided a revolution.
Representative government could address both issues.

The malaise, mistrust, and mendancity surrounding the current administration and their absolutely raving mad decisions are making us a less stable people, not just politically but emotionally. We feel that we’ve been had, snookered. And truly we have. It’s incredibly depressing, even if you’ve known about these thugs all along. John Edwards is so very right. We need some hope—hope that the republic is strong, that the rule of law still exists, and that each of us lives in a country that, while not perfect, at least takes its ideals seriously. It’s very enervating to deal with these Repugs day after day, year after year. A heavy toll on the spirit. And I imagine they count on that, too. What trolls….
I like Edwards and his message, as well. However, there is something about the way he comes across, that makes him hard to accept as a Chief Executive. A fabulous VP with say, Wesley Clark or Barack Obama.

If we had leaders who actually hold these in their hearts, they would have no need to “tap into that”. They would already be there.
From my conversations with the people who live out here in Redneck City, they are tired of the spin, manipulation, and intellectual meanderings. They want to see someone authentic. Somebody who actually believes (1) in them and their intelligence (2) they can handle HONEST assesments and discussions of the issues important to them (3) and that the working people are the real drivers of the American economy and the real producers of its wealth.
They are looking for leaders who are honest, and bold enough to take on the bushistas and the corporatistas without fear of the fallout. After all we’ve seen in the past five years, at least around here, people are less likely to fall for the character assisnations as practiced by the bush administration.
There was a time when I really liked John Edwards. Over time, I have begun to see him as an opportunist who just wants to be President. He was never a good representative for N.C., because, he wanted to run for President. He comes across (to me) as phoney and insincere.
What America needs more than anything else is an intelligent electorate that will attend to the deceptions of our “leaders”. When people pay no attention to the parade of lies that took us into Iraq, to the stealing of the Treasury by Bush cronies and when they are more intrerested in Fox entertainmnet what can hope and optimism depend on? Wishful thinking? People will feel like they have something to look forward to when they they have done something to make it happen. Simply wishing and hoping that their leaders won’t wreck the country and their lives is not enough. Ever.
