Shepard Smith, who hosts a popular program on Fox News and received widespread praise for his work covering Hurricane Katrina’s aftermath, also dodges questions about his sexual orientation.
Smith once chatted me up in a New York City gay piano bar, bought me drinks, and invited me back to his place. When I declined, he asked me to dinner the next night, another invitation I politely refused.
We sat at the bar chatting and drinking martinis until 3 a.m., our conversation interrupted only when he paused to belt out the lyrics to whatever showtune was being performed.

My husband and I really do enjoy Shep’s presentation of the news. He is an admirable person, with style and people skills way beyond average. Whatever his sexual preference is would be just that, HIS sexual preference, and no one elses business.
However, in reference to a comment regarding him having a drink in a gay bar/lounge, everyone who has ever gone into a gay establishment is not gay. Think about it. Narrow mindedness is more of a problem than a person who may or may not be gay…just my thoughts on the matter.
I’ve been hearing on a few forums where FOX NEWS is discussed that Shepard is gay. I just don’t think he is, although I’ve been wrong before. Guess I don’t have that “gaydar” previously spoken of. Just because he chooses to keep his private life private, why do so many assume he’s gay? And I wouldn’t bet too much on this article having a lot of truth in it either.
Am surprised that no one has thought of tailing Lee LaHaye (see “Madison” above), son of famous preacher and writer Tim LaHaye, and getting some incriminating pics of him like in a gay bar or in even a much better position. The pics would be worth many thousands of dollars! Benny

I have no idea about Shepherd Smith’s sexual preference (nore care), but I really don’t care for him. For one, he is a liberal, and was very disrespectful of Michael Steel the other day. Most of all, my husband and I have noticed that he is trying too hard to be a “Paul Harvey” with some of his phrases, and he will never be as good. However, there are a lot of people who like him, and I don’t have to watch every Fox program.
That’s right, AK. In this country, people are free to watch whatever right-wing propaganda they choose. Shepard Smith is the closest thing to a legitimate journalist on Fox News, so you probably should avoid watching him lest you learn some actual facts. However, as a liberal, I do agree with you that Michael Steele is a great RNC chairman. With the exception of Palin, Beck, Hannity and Limbaugh, hardly anyone has done more to make the GOP a laughingstock than he has.

I have been reading this site and laughing out loud at the dribble that is being spewed out of filthy mouths. I have never heard such a mess of insanity as this. All Repubs are homo’s, etc. I take offense at such crap. I know mostly Republicans and not one gay person. It is not that I am in the middle of nowhere either. Houston is pretty large and full of all kind of people. Fox is not liberal either and the Republicans have not bankrupted our country. That sounds like my lost BIL talking. He is a nitwit, too. Peg, glad you’re recovering from your recent illness. I too wondered about Jon only correcting that one error on your part, since almost everything you said was based on erroneous assumptions and faulty reasoning. I am also quite surprised that you know no gay people, since the mayor of Houston is gay and it was ranked 4th in the country for gay couples raising children in the 2010 census. Maybe nobody who knows you wants to tell you they’re gay because it means they’d have to endure your judgments. It’s really big of you to admit it’s “not easy for you to say” that Shepard Smith’s sexual orientation would not cancel out what you see as his good qualities. P.S. Guerra – Wrong. I think about 3 percent of the population is gay. I think about 10 percent of the population has either acted on bisexual impulses or have repressed those impulses. It’s this latter group, people who repress their true nature out of fear of breaking 4,000 year old edicts of nomadic tribesmen collected in the book of Leviticus and elsewhere and/or their fear of rejection within their own families or socio-political groups, who direct their inner turmoil — you called it “self hatred” — out as homophobia. The gay civil rights movement is about ending the homophobes’ centuries-long oppression of gay people and enabling gays to exercise their rights as citizens, just like everyone else.
Come on Madison do you watch prime time television? 50-60 percent of evening shows have same sex relationships in them on a nightly basis. if there is repression or rejection its brought on by your own thinking. Just as you think it’s all about repressing gay or bisexual impulses can be the other way around. How about the people who have come to realize they aren’t gay but are afraid to “come out” because of the ridicule or rejection they’d get from their gay friends? Guerra – I challenge you to name even five currently in-production “evening shows” that “have same sex relationships in them on a nightly basis” — much less 50-60 percent. That wasn’t even true when “Will & Grace” and “Ellen” were in production. I can only think of two shows, one of which is “Glee.” Besides, even if every show on television featured gay themes, that would not translate into gays having full civil rights. It would not stop people from being fired or evicted because they are gay, and it would not protect equal marriage rights for gays.

But mainly, I’m missing your central point. You accused me of believing that “everyone is gay.” When I asserted otherwise, you ignored that point and moved on to — what? Gays are over-represented on television? Straights must pose as gays to avoid ridicule from their gay friends? Did you infer that I said you were homophobic? I don’t know you, but experience has taught me that normal, sexually well-adjusted people are apathetic about the intimate relationships of strangers. Apathy is indifference, which is different from “not having anything against” them. If you disagree with that common-sense theory, please say why.

Why should I care about ANYONE’S sexual orientation?
(It’s still legal – and always God-honoring – to air messages like the following. See Ezekiel 3:18-19. In light of government backing of raunchy behavior (such offenders were even executed in early America!), maybe the separation we really need is the “separation of raunch and state”!)
In Luke 17 in the New Testament, Jesus said that one of the big “signs” that will happen shortly before His return to earth as Judge will be a repeat of the “days of Lot” (see Genesis 19 for details). So gays are actually helping to fulfill this same worldwide “sign” (and making the Bible even more believable!) and thus hurrying up the return of the Judge! They are accomplishing what many preachers haven’t accomplished! Gays couldn’t have accomplished this by just coming out of closets into bedrooms. Instead, they invented new architecture – you know, closets opening on to Main Streets where little kids would be able to watch naked men having sex with each other at festivals in places like San Francisco (where their underground saint – San Andreas – may soon get a big jolt out of what’s going on over his head!). Thanks, gays, for figuring out how to bring back our resurrected Saviour even quicker!

Actually Shepard Smith (“Shep”) is fairly open about being gay among his close friends. This is exactly how Anderson Cooper and Don Lemon (Both at CNN) were for years until they finally came out to the public. If Shep needs to be discreet due to his position at Fox so be it. He never speaks poorly of gay people and as earlier stated he actually is “out” to a close circle of friends. When the time is right for him, he too will probably become more public about it.
I was looking up Smith’s political leanings and came across this site. Curious, I read many of your posts. Conclusion: most of you sound as if you are idiots. Comments (parsphrased) as ‘most republicans in DC are homosexual’ and ‘rich people don’t care they only want your vote’ makes you sound like fools.
