Shepard Smith, who hosts a popular program on Fox News and received widespread praise for his work covering Hurricane Katrina’s aftermath, also dodges questions about his sexual orientation.
Smith once chatted me up in a New York City gay piano bar, bought me drinks, and invited me back to his place. When I declined, he asked me to dinner the next night, another invitation I politely refused.
We sat at the bar chatting and drinking martinis until 3 a.m., our conversation interrupted only when he paused to belt out the lyrics to whatever showtune was being performed.

I am shocked. He exhibits no tell tale indications that he is a homosexual. I thought he was having the time of his life with a bevy of beauties in NYC. Ted-Shep is divorced. He was married to his college girlfriend for several years before they divorced. This “outing” is a crock.
So what? There are millions of divorced gay men and women – many of whom even have children. One example is Rev. Mel White, who worked with christianist extremists like Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson. Mel came out to his wife and kids 20 years ago. He remains close to his ex-wife and children and is now the minister in a truly Christian denomination that preaches love for all people, as Jesus proscribed.
Most gay people have early experiences experimenting with heterosexuality. It’s part of the pressure that haters put on society. Nobody would “choose” to be gay – to be stigmatized – so they go against their natures and try to play straight. It almost ends in anger, resentment and, if the experimentation went all the way to marriage, divorce.
And then there is the fact that some people – or, as Kinsey believed, most people – are bisexual and can adapt to relationships with either gender, especially early in life. (Just one example of this: photos Robert Mapplethorpe took of Arnold Schwarzenegger getting on with other male bodybuilders back in the 1970’s.)
Think about it: Did you “choose” to be heterosexual? If so, you must have experimented with homosexuality early in life and decided it wasn’t your cup of tea.
That’s what Shep did – only in reverse.
If you are secure in your sexuality, you shouldn’t feel threatened that other people are differently constructed sexually. If you do feel threatened by the fact that a Fox News anchor or the chairmain of the Republican Party, for example, are gay – trust me – it says more about you and your fragile sexuality than anyone else’s.
Madison-You seem hell bent on trying to prove a point(which personally I don’t get). Honestly it really is none of our business what his sexuality is and this so called “outing” doesn’t prove a thing and neither do your senseless claims. Just because you say all these people are gay doesn’t mean that Shep is. Get a grip.
Person – The first point is that you said since Shep is divorced, ergo he can’t be gay. That’s just silly.
Secondly, Shepherd Smith is a newsreader for the state-run propaganda network. His bosses in the Republican Party and at the White House – none of whom are actually homophobic and many of whom are themselves gay – hypocritically use the fear and hatred of gay people in the nation as a valve or lever to increase voter turnout, when they need it.
In other words (as Dear Leader would say), they can’t win their arguments based on the merits of their policies – taking tax money from the middle class and giving it to the rich, for example – or their record, which is one of incompetence at running both domestic and foreign affairs, so they resort to enflaming the passions of their base to increase turnout. They used to use racism to get votes, but now they use homophobia, eg. the terror over gay marriage.
Employing fear and hatred of a minority group to manipulate the ignorant to acheive political goals is cynical and corrupt – and undeniably fascistic.
Please reread my comments. I never said that since he was divorced he can’t be gay. I was responding to Ted’s question about his marital status and was answering him. However, just because one person CLAIMS he was approached by him doesn’t prove he is gay. I doubt he would enjoy the female attention as much as he does if he were gay. I have never seen or heard any REAL proof that he is gay.

I think most people realize by now that most male members of the Republican party are homosexual. Shepherd Smith is one of the more obvious ones but even the Bill O’Reilly scandal a few years back revealed that he enjoyed being penetrated by “vibrating sexual devices”, an allegation he subsequently denied. Just because you are not public with your orientation does not mean you are not orientated a certain way. Some prefer not to be as open as others.
Leave Shephard alone…he is not a cock sucker, he is just a normal stud with homo needs. He is supposedly engaged to a normal woman, but then who really knows….

May I first say that I have never heard of the Washington Blade. Next, who the heck cares about Shep’s sexual orientation? I’ve never had that question posed to me on a bio or employment questionaire. Evidently, my future employers don’t give a whit either. I care that Shep does his reporting well.
