GOP’s Parental Litmus Test Is Absurd

Are Senators Tim Scott and Lindsey Graham unmarried, childless cat ladies? (Pensito illustration)

The Republican Party’s newest litmus test — you must have children to have a stake in the future of America — is patently absurd. Kamala Harris is a stepmother, and that counts, JD Vance and Blake Masters.

For your edification and delight, we’ve assembled a totally non-comprehensive list of childless political figures (mostly Republican) who disprove the point:

  • Tiffany Trump, Donald’s fourth child by Marla Maples. Although childless, she is married to billionaire heir Michael Boulos. And, as of 2019, Tiffany had a kitten named Petals. She is a member of “Rich Kids of Instagram.”
  • George Washington, First President of the United States and stepfather to his wife Martha Washington’s two daughters
  • James K. Polk, 11th President of the United States
  • James Buchanan, 15th President of the United States
  • Ginni Thomas, MAGA extremist, sociopathic insurrectionist, helpmate of corrupt Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas
  • Clarence Thomas, the most corrupt U.S. Supreme Court justice in living memory
  • Barry Goldwater, U.S. senator 1953 to 1965 and 1969 to 1987; Republican Party’s nominee for president in 1964
  • Bob Dole, U.S. Rep. from Kansas for eight years, served 27 years in the U.S. Senate; Republican presidential nominee in 1996 and vice presidential nominee in 1976
  • Elizabeth Dole, U.S. Senator from North Carolina 2003 to 2009; a Republican, she served in five presidential administrations, including as U.S. Secretary of Transportation under President Ronald Reagan from 1983 to 1987 and as U.S. Secretary of Labor under Reagan’s successor, George H. W. Bush, from 1989 until 1990; served as president of the American Red Cross 1991 to 1999; she sought the Republican presidential nomination in 2000
  • Condoleeza Rice, United States Secretary of State from 2005 to 2009
  • David Souter, associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court 1990 to 2009
  • George Will, an American libertarian conservative writer and political commentator, who writes regular columns for The Washington Post and provides commentary for NewsNation
    • BTW, we think Tim Scott and Lindsey Graham are indeed cat ladies:
