President Obama’s approval rating, which is at a seven-year high, a new CNN/ORC poll shows. It’s his highest mark since September 2009, when his approval rating sat at 58%.
In the last few years, Trump has been joined by at least two billionaires who are determined to exploit cracks in the wall of defense around the press. The members of this club are innovators. They have sued or funded suits to defend reputations or protect privacy. But an underlying aim appears to be to punish critics… or even destroy entire media outlets. … This kind of manipulation of the law is unfolding at a keen moment of weakness for the press, which has already been buffeted by falling revenue and mounting public disaffection.

Deep within the recesses of recent tax policy is an anti-fraud provision that will delay refunds for millions of taxpayers who file for two popular credits aimed at helping low-income workers. The change means that the 26 million workers claiming $65.6 billion of Earned Income Tax Credits for 2015 will not get money back from the IRS before Feb.15.

Margin by which a new Quinnipiac poll finds American voters say they are “optimistic about the next four years with Donald Trump as president.” That said, by a 52% to 42% margin they say he is not honest and by 57% to 38% spread they say he is not level-headed.
More Americans voted for Hillary Clinton than for Donald Trump. More Americans voted for Democratic Senate candidates than for Republican Senate candidates. And while we don’t have final numbers yet, it looks likely that more Americans will have voted for House Democrats than for House Republicans. … So why aren’t Democrats acting like it? Why aren’t they trying to force Republicans, the media, and the emergent Trump White House to act like it?

“Number of Democratic electors who “have signed onto an attempt to block Donald Trump from winning an Electoral College majority, an effort designed not only to deny Trump the presidency but also to undermine the legitimacy of the institution,” Politico reports. “Even the most optimistic among the Democratic electors acknowledges they’re unlikely to convince the necessary 37 Republican electors to reject Trump — the number they’d likely need to deny him the presidency and send the final decision to the House of Representatives. And even if they do, the Republican-run House might simply elect Trump anyway.”

In campaign world, rapid response is vital. In governance, it can be lethal if it’s in reaction to things small and unimportant. It just strikes me as crazy that the soon-to-be leader of the free world would be waking up each morning this weekend and tweeting comments about what someone said at a play in New York.
