Whence Herman Cain?

Herman Cain’s flip-flops on negotiating with Al Qaeda for the release of Guantanamo terrorists and getting the government out of decision-making when it comes to abortion should have yanked his approval rating down into Santorum territory. Failing that, releasing a strictly-from-amateur web ad that featured a stoned-out looking middle-aged guy smoking a cigarette and a cheesy musical riff right out of “Idiocracy” should have done the trick.

And yet, he’s still ahead in nationwide polling. Why? Andrew Sullivan suggests that…

…the rest of the field is hobbled by one glaring problem respectively, while Cain isn’t. Perry is simply too dumb and lazy to be president. Romney too transparently opportunist for a purist party. Paul is disqualified because of foreign policy. Bachmann is a programmed bonkers-bot. Santorum is a frothy substance whose views of the world are frozen in place sometime around 1986. Gingrich is an asshole who could never win the presidency, and even those who like his permanent smirk/snarl understand that. Huntsman might as well be Al Sharpton, because of his views on climate change, gays and because of his working for Satan. No wonder Cain has a shot, given the debates. He is likable and brilliant at simple, effective presentation. He has the skills of an actor, and a roguish shamelessness that reminds me a little of Clinton. Even though you know he’s a total charlatan, you still kinda like the guy.

He’s black too, and one cannot help but feel that some of his support is really a way of expressing hatred for Obama, and proving that the Tea Party is not racist.

  1. I say blame the left wingers cause g-d knows old Herman is not going to take the wrap for his horn balling. If the story proven true, then Cain might as well get out of the race right now because he wont be winning the republican nomination let alone the national elections. The man cant keep his mouth closed. His attempts to sell his products has made him a joke and nothing more. But this could be good for the democrats because that would mean the nomination run would be between Rick Perry, who has clearly proven himself completely insane…and Romney, who has already declared his allegiance to degrading the middle class. Believe me I don’t mind my president having some women on the side but there is a time for everything.
