Mike Huckabee, the Baptist preacher, Fox News host and former governor of Arkansas, hosted 250 true believers on a cruise to Alaska. Adam Haslett, a writer for Prospect, went along to report on the trip. His report includes this encounter with two of Huckabee’s Christianist followers:
Maggie Benedict and Jinx Drda from suburban St Louis were also greatly disappointed to hear Huckabee had bowed out of the presidential race. They’ve always voted but it wasn’t until Obama’s victory that they became more active in politics.
“It’s the first time I’ve felt the president wasn’t a true American,” Maggie says. “And that he wants to become a dictator. We didn’t like seeing him get elected because of his race.”

This is simply not true tht I didn’t want him to be elected because of his race. I will NEVER give an interview if what is publishing is a lie. I am frankly shock that this young man would lie about what we said. We do think that many people voted for Obama because they wanted to vote in the first black man. That is not being prejudice.
If I was a racist, why did I march and stand up for equal rights during the 60’s Martin Luther King was the most dinamic speaker I have ever heard in my 72 years. I loved him for his cause.
Margaret – When did you move to Washington, D.C.?
I live in STL. Isn’t it amazing that if someone doesn’t agree with some of President Obama’s policies, they are a racist. I admire him for the father he is. Just because I don’t agree with his policies, I have been judged a racist. I simply said that I thought a part of why he was elected was because people wanted to be a part of electing a black man.
I wasn’t asked in my 34 years of teaching, I taught many black students; I loved them as the rest. I also WASN’T asked if I have a black great-granddaughter. Her name is Ellie and we love her as the same as our other 10 grandchildren. We supported her adoption and love her completely. Why are we so eager to attack one another?
Maggie, Your spelling and grammar have dramatically improved since this morning. It’s almost miraculous. Maybe you were a little hungover. Washington is a wild town.
But, as a teacher for 34 years who loved her black students and who even has a black great-grandbaby, why did you say, “It’s the first time I’ve felt the president wasn’t a true American. And that he wants to become a dictator. We didn’t like seeing him get elected because of his race.”
Were you drunk when you said that on the Huckabee cruise, too?
Jon, Once again you are passing judgement without knowing. I do not drink. As for my spelling and grammar, again you are judging me. “We didn’t see him getting elected because of his race.” Again is your judgement. Why didn’t you ask, “What did you mean by that.” I simply meant that I knew many people who voted for him because they felt it was time for a black man to be elected. I had always experienced, men being elected because of their popularity or intelllect etc. To ask me if I was drunk on the Huckabee cruise is also an unkind question. Why does your company allow you to give personal attacks? Why are you so defensive toward Obama when you are willing to strike at every word I say. We have said enough. Blessings to you.
Hey Margaret – I don’t believe you are who you say you are. For one thing, your IP address originates from Washington, D.C., not St. Louis. Please take a photo of yourself in front of the Gateway Arch holding a sign that says “Me” and send it to us by close of business today. When we verify the photo, I will apologize for suggesting you are a semi-literate drunk. The fact that you are a bigot stands, however.
I am from St. Louis, and I have given you all the energy that I care to give. Your judgement means nothing to me. Think what you wish.
Oh, dear faker, the real Margaret Benedict may be “from St. Louis,” but you are in Washington. Besides, as anyone who has taught school for 34 years (or even a few days) would know, there is only one “e” in “judgment.” But since you have ceded the power to me to judge you, I hereby declare that fake Margaret Benedict is a drunken, semi-literate defender of bigots.
Margaret appears to be rather uneducated puppet for someone. Spelling and grammar indicates educational short-comings. Denial that she-he is a racist is futile because when you choose to ISOLATE that he is black, in a comment and therefore not ready to be president …..THAT IS RACIST!
The very fact one was on a cruise with Huckabee shows how you view things. Take your foot out of your mouth and try getting a proper education. Step one, no more FOX propaganda.
