In the wake of the Kentucky primary May 18, a few Republican talking heads mentioned they’d seen a private poll that had GOP/tea bagger candidate Rand Paul with a 20 point advantage over his Democratic opponent, Attorney General Jack Conway.
If that was true — a scour of the Google produced zilch — Paul’s lead has evaporated in the wake of his statements opposing anti-discrimination provisions in the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and his subsequent voicing of support for BP, the oil company responsible for the massive oil-spill disaster that killed 11 workers in the Gulf of Mexico and that is poised to destroy the economy in the region.
While these gaffes are about as serious as political missteps can be, neither of them has done significant damage to his popularity back home. A new DailyKos/Research 2000 poll finds that Paul still maintains a favorability rating of 53 percent in Kentucky. His Democratic opponent, Attorney General Jack Conway, has a 48 percent favorability rating.
The poll, which has a margin of error of 4 percent, gives Paul a statistical lead over Conway, 44 percent to 41 percent, in the general election.
In deciding who’ll they’ll vote for in November, women prefer Conway, 46 percent to 38 percent; while among men, half support Paul and just 36 percent support Conway.
Paul’s opposition to civil rights protections appears to have registered with some Kentuckians, however. Conway performs extremely well among blacks, 80 percent to 3 percent. He is also strong among younger voters, holding a 50 percent to 30 percent advantage over Paul.
John McCain and Sarah Palin won Kentucky in the 2008 election, and Pres. Obama remains unpopular there. His favorability rating is 37 percent/unfavorability 60 percent.

“John McCain and Sarah Palin won Kentucky in the 2008 election, and Pres. Obama remains unpopular there. His favorability rating is 37 percent/unfavorability 60 percent.”
And I’m wondering if you asked the majority of Kentuckians in the unfavorable category why this is so, what they would state as their reasons. If they gave frank answers, I believe the results would be extremely revealing.
Yup, Majii — revealing Obama Derangement Syndrome. He’s a Muslim, socialist Nazi fascist, doncha know.
