Watching House Minority Leader John Boehner’s awful speech before the vote on health care reform last night at my house, it struck the two of us that Boehner must have fortified himself a bit too much before taking the podium. Interestingly, when MSNBC’s coverage went back to the anchor desk, the first thing anyone said corroborated our take. Conservative-ish reporter Bob Franken, formerly of CNN, said something like it appeared Boehner had had an extra drink before the speech.
There is precedence for Boehner showing up in his cups for a big national address. Flashback to May 2007, when an obviously intoxicated Boehner took to the floor and began weeping because he was afraid the now Democratic-controlled House would not approve borrowing another $100 billion to fund George W. Bush’s occupation of Iraq:
(The funding was approved.)
In its coverage of Boehner’s weeping over war funding, ThinkProgres suggested he should “channel his bottled up emotions towards a more worthy end — changing the course in Iraq rather than defending the status quo.” (Emphasis added.)
Right-leaning Politico reported then, too, that a GOP colleague of Boehner “noted that Boehner cries more often later in the day.”
So what do you think? Democratic Underground has a poll on Boehner’s state of mind that asks was Boehner A) “pissed drunk,” B) “just his usual assclown self” or C) All of the above. (As of this writing, C is winning.)

Sober, Boehner seems pretty together and businesslike. However, when one drinks, one tends to speak what’s really on one’s mind, and very real facets of one’s personality are exposed.
Is it possible the real John Boehner is a weak, wimpering, simpering drunken loser?
Are you kidding me? Ever check out his rummy eyes? This dude is definitely an addicted drunk. His slurred speech, permanently seeping eyes, constant lip licking…he’s got John Barleycorn in his life, for sure. I’m not trying to tell him how to live his life, but I don’t think any of his constituents, or any of the Americans he claims to speak for, should follow his lead on any issue. My now deceased father was fun to be around too…when he was drunk.
I guess that the Republicans in the House can’t read 161 of their own admendments posted on line in 72 hours!
When are they going to stop acting like a spoiled child throwing at tatrum?
With all the grandstanding by republicans about going to court against the mandate to buy insurance, isn’t it in the bill that the states have the right to do their own thing, like scrapping the bill and providing insurance for their residents if they can do it better and cheaper – (section 1302?)
Definitely Slaushed! I could smell the bourbon coming thru the TV when he was talking. I swear he looks like he REAKS of Booze and Cigars
re: nikolai,
oh does one? does one also quote directly from the tagged article w/o quotation marks or original observation?
sorry, i was sober
They’re ALL screaming NO, NO, NO, when asked if ANY of them had read the bill and yet they ALL profess to be EXPERTS as to what’s IN IT.
SICKENING!
As for Boehner, he is ALWAYS drunk.
WOW !! THE GUY IS CRAZY THAN A GOAT AND SPEAKING AND CRYING LIKE THAT ! I AM SURE TERRORISTS ARE HAVING A FIELD TRIP SEEING HIM MAKING AN ASS OUT OF HIMSELF !! DOES NOT SHOW STRENGHT !! WHO THE HELL VOTED HIM IN ? AA ?
