Haitian Americans Approve of U.S. Response

A New America Media/Bendixen & Amandi poll surveyed Haitians living in South Florida and across the country, and found that 63 percent disapprove of how Haitian President René Préval’s government has responded to the earthquake. However, approval of the U.S. government’s response was at 96 percent — slightly higher than approval of the U.N. response, 88 percent.

Indeed, a majority of Haitian Americans would support the United Nations and the international community taking over Haiti’s day-to-day operations until the country recovers from the catastrophe.

Three-fifths of respondents said at least some of their loved ones died as a result of the Jan. 12 earthquake. Two-thirds of Haitian Americans polled said they would be willing to move back to Haiti temporarily to assist in the reconstruction.

More than 90 percent of Haitian Americans say they are monitoring events regularly, often through English-language cable news. Seventy-eight percent have sent a financial contribution to help earthquake victims, and nearly two-thirds said they are willing to adopt or provide foster care for a child orphaned by the disaster.

Tea Baggers Want Palin to Quit For-Profit Tea Bagger Convention

logo-tepra-baprg-conventionQuitting is what Sarah Palin does best, but will she heed entreaties from her tea bagger fan base and reneg on her speaking engagement at the National Tea Party Convention at Opryland in Nashville next weekend?

A full-scale intramural brawl has broken out over the convention, mostly its producer Judson Phillips, the founder of the Tea Party Nation, one of the dozens of tea bagger splinter groups around the country, failed at first to mention that he was operating the meeting as a for-profit venture — a sort of political Amway convention.

Stephanie Mencimer at Mother Jones reports that because of the dissenion in the ranks, sales of the $349 tickets to the Palin event Sunday night are down — and holders of the $549 tickets to the other weekend sessions are demanding and receiving refunds:

Anthony Shreeve is an activist in Dandridge, Tenn. who quit the convention organizing committee over the expensive ticket prices. He says he has it on good authority that most of the approximately 500 speech-only tickets have not been sold. Shreeve adds that Phillips “isn’t going to sell any more,” and says other would-be attendees have been demanding — and receiving — refunds. Late on Tuesday afternoon, I tested his claim by attempting to buy 10 tickets to the dinner. If I’d been prepared to shell out $3,587.10, that would apparently have been no problem. “I really hope that Sarah Palin doesn’t come to this event because it’s going to be really embarrassing for her to walk into a half-empty room,” says Shreeve…

Given all the negative publicity, Shreeve is surprised Palin hasn’t pulled out already. “In her contract she is allowed to send a representative if she can’t make it if she’s sick or something. Maybe she’ll come down with the flu,” he says with a laugh. He adds that Tea Partiers have written her letters pleading with her not to come because they believe that reports of a glitzy, high-priced dinner would hurt the real Tea Party movement, which prides itself on its thrifty, grassroots image. Meanwhile, [Tami Kilmarx, a nurse in Nashville who also resigned from the Tea Party Nation convention planning committee after falling out with Phillips,] reports that Nashville activists have contacted the Washington Speakers Bureau, which represents Palin, with concerns. And she says Tea Party activists in Tennessee have been trying to reach Palin through the media to let her know that Tea Party Nation does not represent the majority of Tea Party groups in the state. (Of the 42 Tennessee Tea Party groups, only one is officially supporting the convention.)

MoJo also reports that some sponsors have pulled out, including the National Precinct Alliance, the American Liberty Alliance, American Majority, and the Federation for American Immigration Reform — and right-wing extremist Rep. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee may be withdrawing as speaker. As of this writing, she is still listed among the speakers on the convention’s homepage:

Our Sponsors include Tea Party Emporium, Judicial Watch, Eagle Forum, The Leadership Institute, Vision America, SurgeUSA, Smart Girl Politics and National Taxpayers Union. Participants include: Tea Party Express, The Memphis Tea Party, National Precinct Alliance, Young Americans for Freedom, The Evergreen/Conifer Tea Party, North Carolina Freedom Tea Party, Rep. Michele Bachmann, Rep. Marsha Blackburn, Joseph Farah, Angela McGlowan, Judge Roy Moore, Tom Fitton, Bruce Donnelly, Ana Puig, Steve Milloy, Mark Skoda, Keli Carender (aka Liberty Belle), Dr. B. Leland Baker, Walter Fitzgerald, Philip Glass, Dr. Rick Scarborough, David DeGerolamo and Lori Christenson.

It sounds like the first national tea bagger convention has all the makings of a train wreck. Too bad Judson Phillips, in typical proto-fascist fashion, has banned the media. So unless an attendee with a Flip camera or camphone releases video to You Tube, we may never know how bad it really was.

Ever since I started covering politics, the Democratic ruling class has been driven by one fantasy: that voters will get so furious at people with M.B.A.’s that they will hand power to people with Ph.D.’s. The Republican ruling class has been driven by the fantasy that voters will get so furious at people with Ph.D.’s that they will hand power to people with M.B.A.’s. Members of the ruling class love populism because they think it will help their section of the elite gain power.

It is very difficult to have a democracy without citizens. It is impossible to be a citizen if you don’t make an effort to understand the most basic activities of your government. It is very difficult to thrive in an increasingly competitive world if you’re a nation of dodos.

Osama bin Laden Claims Credit for Underpants Bomber – But Isn’t Osama Dead?

The spate of headlines over the weekend announcing that Osama bin Laden was back with a new audio-only message in which he claimed credit for the attempt by Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab to blow up a passenger jet via a bomb in his underwear leave out out one foundational fact: We don’t really know if Osama bin Laden is alive.

It has been years since a video was released that could be verified as having been filmed later than the general timeframe of the attacks on the United States in 2001, and digitizing a convincing audio recording of bin Laden ranting would be relatively easy. A savvy high school student could do it with the right software.

Jazz from Hell caught this telling omission from the weekend’s news, too:

Buried deep in the piece is the following factoid: “There was no way to confirm the voice was actually that of Bin Laden.” Naturally, that won’t stop the AP, Al Jazeera, Fox News, the Republican Party, right-wingers, wannabe terrorists and the Pentagon from taking Osama’s “statement” at face value and reacting forthwith while the rest of us wonder what the fuck is really going on.

At this point, hell, The News™ may as well run headlines like JESUS DENOUNCES LIBERALS, or CHRIST HAILS BROWN ELECTION IN BLUE STATE, or MESSIAH LAMBASTES CHARGERS FOR KEEPING NORV TURNER. Buried deep in these pieces would be, “There was no way to confirm the voice was that of Jesus.” How about making that your first sentence, newschebags?

Speaking of Christmas, or rather Boxing Day, on Dec. 26, 2001, a little over three months after the 9/11 attacks, no less a right-wing propaganda outlet than Fox News reported that Osama had died:

Osama bin Laden has died a peaceful death due to an untreated lung complication, the Pakistan Observer reported, citing a Taliban leader who allegedly attended the funeral of the Al Qaeda leader.

“The Coalition troops are engaged in a mad search operation but they would never be able to fulfill their cherished goal of getting Osama alive or dead,” the source said.

Bin Laden, according to the source, was suffering from a serious lung complication and succumbed to the disease in mid-December, in the vicinity of the Tora Bora mountains. The source claimed that bin Laden was laid to rest honorably in his last abode and his grave was made as per his Wahabi belief.

About 30 close associates of bin Laden in Al Qaeda, including his most trusted and personal bodyguards, his family members and some “Taliban friends,” attended the funeral rites. A volley of bullets was also fired to pay final tribute to the “great leader.”

Six month after bin Laden’s obituary in Fox News, Time magazine speculated about reports of the death of the terrorist mastermind:

Six months after hailing bin Laden’s imminent capture or death, Pentagon officials now admit that the al-Qaeda leader “has gone missing” since the siege of Tora Bora. Missing, of course, could mean dead, and a small minority of officials in the Pentagon, CIA and FBI believe that bin Laden’s public silence since the December tape suggests he has succumbed — if not to U.S. air strikes, then possibly to kidney failure. But the fact is, Washington just doesn’t know. “The proof that he’s alive is, we don’t hear anything from Osama bin Laden,” says Larry Johnson, a former State Department counterterrorism official. “The proof that he’s dead is, we don’t hear anything from Osama bin Laden.”

In a book published last year, “Osama bin Laden: Dead or Alive?” David Ray Griffin, a retired professor of religion and theology at Claremont College in California, lays out a convincing case that bin Laden is dead:

First, up until mid-December 13, 2001, the CIA had regularly been intercepting messages between bin Laden and his people. At that time, however, the messages suddenly stopped, and the CIA has never again intercepted a message.

Second, on December 26, 2001, a leading Pakistani newspaper published a story reporting that bin Laden had died in mid-December, adding:

“A prominent official in the Afghan Taleban movement . . . stated . . . that he had himself attended the funeral of bin Laden and saw his face prior to burial.”

Third, bin Laden had kidney disease. He had been treated for it in the American Hospital in Dubai in July 2001, at which time he reportedly ordered two dialysis machines to take home. If you have ever wondered what bin Laden was doing the night before the 9/11 attacks, CBS News reported that he was being given kidney dialysis treatment in a hospital in Pakistan. And in January of 2001, Dr. Sanjay Gupta said – based on a video of bin Laden that had been made in either late November or early December of 2001 – that he appeared to be in the last stages of kidney failure.

Fourth, In July of 2002, CNN reported that bin Laden’s bodyguards had been captured in February of that year, adding: “Sources believe that if the bodyguards were captured away from bin Laden, it is likely the most-wanted man in the world is dead.”

Fifth, the United States has since 2001 offered a $25 million reward for any information leading to the capture or killing of bin Laden. But this reward offer has produced no such information, even though Pakistan has many desperately poor people, only about half of whom have been supportive of bin Laden.

One wonders — hopes — that when these recordings come out, someone is bothering to pick up the phone ask someone who knows/knew bin Ladin if the voice is authentic — someone like, say, Omar bin Laden, the terrorist mastermind’s prodigal son, who was profiled in the current issue of Rolling Stone. Omar apparently believes his father is alive:

“I love him because he is my father,” he says. “I don’t want him to be caught and put on trial. It would break my heart. I wish he could die before someone gets him. I don’t want to see my father under the rule of somebody else. My father is my father, to this day, and until I die. I came from his body. I am part of him.”

“How do you feel when you see him on television?” I ask.

“I get worried,” Omar says. “For me, for my father, for the world.”

And:

According to Omar, Americans are actually lucky that his father has not been captured or killed. “It is going to be worse when my father dies,” he says. “The world is going to be very, very nasty then. It will be a disaster.”

“Omar always says that without the head, the arms and legs will run wherever,” Zaina says.

“I know this for a fact,” Omar says. “People were always asking my father to attack more. They would say, ‘Sheik, we must do more.’ Crazy fucking things. My father has a religious goal. He is controlled by the rules of jihad. He only kills if he thinks there is a need.”

“Will there be more attacks?” [the Rolling Stone reporter asks].

“I don’t think so,” Omar says. “He doesn’t need to. As soon as America went to Afghanistan, his plan worked. He has already won.”

It’s true that Osama and al Qaeda have won both all the battles so far in his war against Western civilization. Right-wing fearmongers like Dick Cheney and Karl Rove have played right into his hands. Whether or not the United States declares victory in its occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan, by drawing us into those briar patches, he has ensured that new generations of suiciders will be created for decades to come.

And the two occupations have sucked up trillions of dollars from U.S. and coalition treasuries and are a partial reason Western civilization is on the brink of financial ruin — just as the Soviet Union was on the brink of collapse when bin Laden and his motley crew forced it out of Afghanistan in 1989. The communist regime in Moscow collapsed just two years later.

All that being said, it’s a wonderment why a media whore like bin Laden has not released an indisputable video recording of himself in recent years. While he certainly doesn’t need to prove he is alive to get the world’s attention, it’s hard to believe that if he were alive he would have the willpower to resist.

Origins of the Tea Bagger Movement: Santelli’s Rant, Ron Paul’s Fundraiser or a 1974 Pro-Segregation Rally in Boston?

There is a debate out there about the origins of the tea bagger movement. Some say it was during a rant by CNBC’s Rick Santelli on Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009, about the new administration’s plan to help mortgage holders who were underwater:

RICK SANTELLI: The government is promoting bad behavior. Because we certainly don’t want to put stimulus forth and give people a whopping $8 or $10 in their check, and think that they ought to save it, and in terms of modifications… I’ll tell you what, I have an idea.

You know, the new administration’s big on computers and technology– How about this, President and new administration? Why don’t you put up a website to have people vote on the Internet as a referendum to see if we really want to subsidize the losers’ mortgages; or would we like to at least buy cars and buy houses in foreclosure and give them to people that might have a chance to actually prosper down the road, and reward people that could carry the water instead of drink the water?

TRADER ON FLOOR: That’s a novel idea.

(Applause, cheering [by employees of the exchange behind him on the trading floor])

JOE KERNEN: Hey, Rick… Oh, boy. They’re like putty in your hands. Did you hear…?

SANTELLI: No they’re not, Joe. They’re not like putty in our hands. This is America! How many of you people want to pay for your neighbor’s mortgage that has an extra bathroom and can’t pay their bills? Raise their hand.

(Booing)

President Obama, are you listening?

TRADER: How ’bout we all stop paying our mortgage? It’s a moral hazard.

KERNEN: It’s like mob rule here. I’m getting scared. I’m glad I’m…

CARL QUINTANILLA: Get some bricks and bats…

SANTELLI: Don’t get scared, Joe. They’re already scaring you. You know, Cuba used to have mansions and a relatively decent economny. They moved from the individual to the collective. Now, they’re driving ‘54 Chevys, maybe the last great car to come out of Detroit.

KERNEN: They’re driving them on water, too, which is a little strange to watch.

SANTELLI: There you go.

KERNEN: Hey Rick, how about the notion that, Wilbur pointed out, you can go down to 2 percent on the mortgage…

SANTELLI: You could go down to -2 percent. They can’t afford the house.

KERNEN: …and still have 40 percent, and still have 40 percent not be able to do it. So why are they in the house? Why are we trying to keep them in the house?

SANTELLI: I know Mr. Summers is a great economist, but boy, I’d love the answer to that one.

REBECCA QUICK: Wow. Wilbur, you get people fired up.

SANTELLI: We’re thinking of having a Chicago Tea Party in July. All you capitalists that want to show up to Lake Michigan, I’m gonna start organizing.

(Whistling, cheering)

The Ron Paul wing of the right-wing fringe believes the tea bag movement was born a year earlier, in December when Paul’s quixotic campaign for the presidency surprised Beltway types by breaking single-day fundraising records — taking in $6 million — on the 234th anniversary of the actual Boston Tea Party.

The third possibility — shown in the video at the top — comes from another libertarian source, Reason magazine:

While submerged in the WGBH archives, watching old clips on the busing battles that gripped South Boston in the 1970s, I came across this “The 10 O’Clock News” coverage of a September 9, 1974, rally at Government Center denouncing Judge W. Arthur Garrity, who ordered the desegregation of Southie schools. Sen. Ted Kennedy attempts to calm the crowd, but is shouted down and pelted with newspapers and tomatoes.

The WGBH anchor notes a “new touch” to the protest movement, “the abundance of teabags, apparently to signify that the demonstrators were in the same vein of those who tipped the tea into the harbor.”

Chavistas Say U.S. Caused Haiti Disaster with ‘Earthquake Weapon’

Chavez warns Ahmadinejad about HAARP.
Chavez warns Ahmadinejad about HAARP.

State-run newspapers and television channels in Venezuela are “reporting” that last week’s earthquake in Haiti was the result of the United States deploying a secret “weapon of earthquakes,” according to ElDiarioExterior.com. The reason? To make it a protectorate, silly, which explains why we’ve been quick with the troops and slow with the soup.

But wait, that’s not all!

The reason the U.S. military would shoot an earthquake at Haiti is because Haiti made a nice target to practice on before we turn our doomsday gun on our absolute worst enemy in the world. But more on that later.

On the website of Radio Nacional de Venezuela (RNV) are published statements of the university professor, Vladimir Acosta, a regular contributor to the media controlled by the government of Hugo Chávez, accusing the U.S. of wanting to make Haiti a protectorate under the guise of the natural disaster. But to further the conspiracy theory, Acosta argued that “we have the worrisome suspicion that this earthquake may be associated with the project called HAARP, a system that can generate violent and unexpected changes in climate.”

In the same line of “reporting,” live public television delves into the theory to say that the aim was to test the weapon for later use against Iran. The television station is defined on its website as “a means of communication of the Venezuelan state, educational, cultural and information that promotes participatory democracy, solidarity and Latin American integration from a new paradigm of communication in line with the new model political, economic and social system established in the constitution of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.”

— online Google translation from Spanish

And how do the Venezuelans know this? The Russians told them, so you know it’s true.

As the channel Vive, a case report of the Russian Northern Fleet “would indicate that the earthquake that devastated Haiti was the ‘clear results’ of a test of the U.S. Navy through one of its ‘weapons of earthquakes.'”

And how do they know it’s true? Because why else would the U.S. Southern Command have Gen. P.K. Keen on the ground in Haiti at the time of the attack, er, quake? Because they knew it was going to devastate the country, and we could then move in troops and military material under the guise of humanitarian aid.

And, if one is to believe President Hugo Chavez’ media operatives, the Russian Navy also blamed the October 2008 earthquake in Sichuan Province, China, on the United States. Seems to me, we’re getting pretty handy with this HAARP thingy that’s able to create “climate anomalies to cause floods, droughts and hurricanes.”

So why are we taking potshots at China and Haiti with this incredibly powerful weapon (and could Katrina have been a ricochet?)? If you’re a chavista, it’s obvious:

The objective “end” of all the alleged evidence would be “the destruction of Iran through a series of earthquakes designed to topple the current Islamic regime.”

What do you say we make our next practice target, oh, I don’t know — Venezuela???
