I believe Obama is going to win the nomination next week, and, except for McCain’s vulnerabilities inside his own party, I still can’t see any reason why the Republicans won’t mop the floor with him. I fear our party is about to commit political suicide — again. All the internals — on Iraq, terrorism, even the economy, for crying out loud — consistently show McCain trouncing him. The only question on which Obama polls better than McCain is on healthcare.
It’s not about cult of personality for me. I’m not a huge fan of the Clintons, and never have been. Conversely, none of that crap about Hillary bothers me in the least. (You came in late – I supported Wes Clark in 04 and Richardson, then Biden this year, only switched to Hillary after the other, more experienced, less baggage-encumbered candidates dropped out.)
Any Dem will bring in a better team to run the country than any Gop. For me, it’s only about beating Republicans.
If Obama can beat the Clintons, that’s a good start, and I will to support him, but the creeping dread I feel feels like the way I felt at the beginning of the Iraq invasion: I know this is wrong but I’ll support the troops, right or wrong. I’m a Democrat, and when he’s the nominee I’ll support him 100%, but it I fear we’re in for Kerry 04 redux.
Obama must pick an attack dog VP, a tough liberal — somebody like Bob Kerrey, who is a wounded Vietnam vet, former gov. of a red state. Kerrey won’t do it; his wife hates politics. But someone like that.
All this cumbayah stuff scares the crap out of me. Republicans will crush that within minutes after the Dem Convention by going extremely negative. If Obama doesn’t answer the attacks, he really will be John Kerry Jr. If he does, after all the attacks, counter-attacks, counter-counter-attacks and so forth, you will see Obama’s crowds, especially the kids, disappear.
The only real marker of success for the Dems this year I can see is the fact that McCain is weak. If Obama were running against a Bush/Rove-type machine, for example, he wouldn’t stand a chance.
But, like I said: My party right or wrong, do or die.
PS. Just thought of another marker for Dem success this year: Ohio. Florida is lost but if the election is as close as it has been the last two cycles, and it comes down to Ohio like it did last time, the GOP there has been devastated by scandal. So if McCain wins every state Bush did in 04 and Obama wins every state Kerry won, and it comes down to Ohio, we still might have a chance.
The fanaticism doesn’t worry me as much as the naivete.
