I complain about obsessing on the horse race so early, and yet somehow it is… irresistible.
According to the USA Today-Gallup poll,the GOP’s putative frontrunner, Rudy Giuliani lost 13 percentage points over the last three weeks, from 44 percent on March 4 to 31 percent now. His support was drained by “Law & Order” star Fred Thompson, who is not in the race. Thompson has support from 12 percent of voters now, and was not listed in the poll last time.
Sen. John McCain is up two points at 22 percent. Newt Gingrich is down one point to 8 percent. But my favorite is Mitt Romney, who is at 3 percent, down from 8 percent in the last poll. Looks like Republicans aren’t buying his filp-flops.
On the Democratic side, the top three are virtually unchanged: Hillary Clinton at 35 percent, Barack Obama at 22 percent and Al Gore — also not running — at 17 percent.
John Edwards is fourth with 14 percent, gaining 5 points after the announcement he would stay in the race despite the reocurrence of his wife’s cancer.
Bill Richardson and Joe Biden have flipped for bottom of the heap. Richardson has 3 percent, up from 1 percent; Biden has 1 percent, down from 3 percent.

Where is Reagan when we need him!?
Ah, here he is! Well, he looks
and sounds just like him–almost. It’s the Tall Tennessean, Walking taller, standing straighter, appearing more presidential than any other
Republican in the race, and he
isn’t yet on the track! But
not to be discouraged, ye GOP Forever Hopefuls who had almost given up…like the Calvary, he
has arrived…and just in time! Our hero. Our hope. And he is even wearing a white hat!
Seriously speaking, that which I am:
Fred Dalton Thompson is the man
for our times, our hard times,
our deceptive times, our anti-Christian times. He may have to
endure some of the vilest, most
venomous, hate-spewing attacks
than any candidate to date. But
guess what. He will endure.
And not only will he endure. He will win the nomination, and then he will win the election in 2008!
Ye Grand Old Party, hold up your battered head. FDT has arrived
and with him, as with Reagan when he threw his white hat in the ring, we, too, are destined
for Victory!
Oh yeah — what’s FDT’s position on the war?
Does he agree with Bush and McCain that the war should continue until every American soldier is dead or wounded, and risk having approval levels in the 20s and 30s as the president and the senator do on the war?
Or does he agree with Sen. Chuck Hagel that the war is a disastrously managed waste of America’s precious blood and treasure? If so, he’ll risk being savaged by Christian nationalists and neo-cons who have staked their professional careers, respectively, on preparing Israel for the Second Coming and obtaining Iraq’s oil reserves.
