PA-O7: Wacky Weldon Trashes Cancer Child, Supports Coronation of Moonie Cult Leader As ‘Messiah’ — and Gets an Earful from His District

Rep. Curt Weldon, R-Pennsylvania is one of a handful of florid, sputtering, endomorphic GOP House members — like Duncan Hunter, R-California, James Sensenbrenner, R-Wisconsin, and Howard Coble, R-N.C. — who look like they could explode at any minute.

Weldon’s pet topic is the purported Able-Danger warnings about 9/11 that, if true, would conveniently pin the blame for the attacks precisely where the GOP has always wanted it: on Bill Clinton. Get Weldon talking about Able-Danger and soon there’s more spittle flying than in one of Chris Matthew’s rants about Hillary Clinton.

After 20 years in the House, Weldon is facing serious competition for his PA-07 seat, and the challenge has already brought out his true colors. When a Democratic opponent, retired Adm. Joe Sestak, was dealing with his four-year-old daughter’s diagnosis of a malignant brain tumor, Rep. Weldon couldn’t resist piling on:

Weldon also suggested Sestak should have sent his daughter to a hospital in Philadelphia or Delaware, rather than the Washington hospital.

I guess this is how Rove Republicans say, “Best wishes to your little girl. Hope she gets well soon.”

And then there was Weldon’s attendance at a Republican-oriented event in U.S. government-owned building in which cult-leader Rev. Sun Yung Moon, publisher of the GOP’s Washington Times newspaper, crowned himself God:

An example of the wacko side: Weldon’s presence at a Washington ceremony at which the Rev. Sun Myung Moon was crowned as “humanity’s Savior, Messiah, Returning Lord and True Parent.”

Those aren’t my words. Those are the words of the Unification Church, which sponsored the 2004 event at the Dirksen Senate Office Building.

Weldon, at first, denied he was present. Later, when a videotape was produced showing him there, he said he had left before the Rev. Moon was, well, deified.

My name is Rev. Moon, but you can call me God.

My colleage Buck might say, “Lord, it is time to call Curt home.” But our friend Charlie, a student at Swarthmore College, which is in Weldon’s district, speaks for everyone who would like Weldon to endure some of what he’s dished out before Jesus calls him home:

So, Curt (I can call you Curt, can’t I?), you criticized Mr. Sestak’s choice to send his gravely ill daughter to a hospital in Washington, with one of the best pediatric brain tumor programs in the entire world, rather than a hospital in Pennsylvania. Well, Curt, you’re have more important things to worry about than how the Sestak family chooses to care for their child. Like the fact that in a few months you’re going to be unemployed. And, perhaps more importantly, your mom is so ugly that they filmed “Gorillas in the Mist” in her shower.

You see, Curt, a funny thing happens when a Congressman serves for twenty years. He becomes complacent. He becomes lazy. He forgets that his seat doesn’t belong to him. It belongs to the American people. You’ll be aware of this soon, Curt. We’re taking our seat back. Because people hate you, Curt. They don’t like Congressmen who attack terminally ill little girls. But don’t worry, Curt. When they tell you to “die in a fire,” they don’t mean it. They don’t mean a fire specifically; they’re not picky about how it happens.

It’s a shame that it takes something like you attacking a little girl to bring about your exit. Your September 11th conspiracy theories were not enough. The fact that you spoke at the coronation of Sun Myung Moon “as humanity’s Savior, Messiah, Returning Lord and True Parent” wasn’t enough. The fact that you lied about it repeatedly until photographic evidence appeared wasn’t enough. (Incidentally, do you realize how crazy Moon is, Curt? He makes L. Ron Hubbard look like Moses). The fact that your mom is so fat that she stepped on a dollar and made change wasn’t enough. However, attacking Joe Sestak’s daughter is the nail in your coffin, Curt.
