Boehner Invites Birther Radio Host to Broadcast from House ‘Speaker’s Office’ on Election Night

Ohio-based racist hate-speech provocateur Willie Cunningham first made national news in February 2008 when GOP presidential candidate John McCain threw him under the bus after Cunningham had warmed up the crowd at a McCain campaign event with a long screed insulting then-candidate Barack Obama as “a hack, Chicago-style Daley politician” and saying that “the great prophet from Chicago [will one day take] the stand and the world leaders who want to kill us will simply be singing Kumbaya together around the table with Barack Obama.”

Now Speaker Wannabe John Boehner has invited Cunningham to broadcast his radio smearfest from Boehner’s office on Election Night:

“I’m going to do my show that day from the portico of the Speaker of the House’s office in the U.S. Capitol. I’ve been invited there by the new Speaker of the House, John Boehner, and I’ll be the only radio talk show host in the speaker’s office, doing my show from the portico overlooking the Washington Monument,” Cunningham said. “And I’m going to do it.” Listen here:

Of course, if Republicans do win back the House — and what a tragedy that would be for this great country — Boehner won’t be elected speaker until January. Given Cunningham’s record of hate speech like this, it is not credible that Speaker Nancy Pelosi will allow Cunningham to broadcast from her office. For example:

  • Cunningham on Obama: “What we have here is this little boy who grew up in Jakarta, Indonesia, at the age of 6 to 10, rejected by his own father, rejected by his own mother, rejected by his stepfather, raised by his grandparents”
  • Cunningham suggests Obama’s lack of college transcripts is “because it may say” Obama’s “an Indonesian citizen”
  • Bill Cunningham advocates “beat[ing] the hell outta” homeless people with “a big old cane, Singapore-style”
  • Cunningham on the poor: “They’re poor because they lack values, ethics, and morals”
  • Cunningham compared Obama to Castro, Mao, and Hitler, declared Obama is “now poised … to seize power in America”
  • Radio host Cunningham says media give Obama a “free pass” because “he’s black, he’s a liberal, and he’s a Democrat”
  • Cunningham on Obama Sr.: “That’s what black fathers do. They simply leave”

Last week, Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, (D-Fla.) was asked if this sort of behavior was a sign that Boehner was “measuring the drapes” for the speaker’s office. Not measuring, Wasserman-Schultz replied, he’s “smoking the drapes.”

Let’s hope she is right.

  1. According to Think Progress when one of its reporters spoke to Boehner, he stated that he hasn’t exactly decided where Cunningham will be broadcasting from in November. This makes it hard to determine exactly what agreement Cunningham made with Boehner. I do know one thing though, I’m going to be working in my neighborhood to GOTV in November with the goal of denying Boehner the position of Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives in January 2011.
