Cognitive dissonance held the floor in the U.S. House again yesterday. First, the Republican leadership under Speaker John Boehner voted to fund the extenstion of lower rates on student loans by killing programs that provided cancer screening and similar women’s health-care service.

Ultrasound Mandate: Transvaginal Procedures Are Already Required in Texas

Rick Perry declared the passage of a law requiring women seeking abortions to undergo sonograms an “emergency item” on the Legislature’s calendar. Despite the fact that the procedures are medically unnecessary, the Big Government Republicans who control the Texas Legislature passed the bill, and Gov. Perry signed it into law in May 2011, three months before he launched his bid for the GOP presidential nomination.

Earlier this month, after challenges to the law failed in court, the government’s ultrasound mandate — which includes the transvaginal ultrasounds that are so controversial now in Virginia — went into effect in Texas:

Witness Panel for House Republicans’ Hearing on Contraceptives Is Men Only

“What I want to know is, where are the women?” asked Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) shortly before she walked out of House oversight committee hearing on insurance coverage for contraceptives. “I look at this panel [of witnesses], and I don’t see one single individual representing the tens of millions of women across the country who want and need insurance coverage for basic preventive health care services, including family planning.”

Oversight Chairman Darrell Issa called five witnesses who opposed a rule floated and then quickly rescinded by the Obama administration last week that would have required church-owned businesses to cover the cost of contraceptives for their employees. All five Republican witnesses were men.
