Number of Uninsured Increased for the First Time Since 2014

“The share of Americans with health insurance fell last year, despite a strong economy that lifted families out of poverty,” the New York Times reports. “About 27.5 million people, or 8.5 percent of the population, lacked health insurance for all of 2018, up from 7.9 percent the year before, the Census Bureau reported Tuesday. It was the first increase since the Affordable Care Act took full effect in 2014, and experts said it was at least partly the result of the Trump administration’s efforts to undermine that law.”

Despite Robust Economy, More Children Are Uninsured

“For the first time in nearly a decade, the number of uninsured children in America has grown,” CNN reports. “The reversal is unprecedented, particularly given a strong economy in which more people are landing jobs and gaining access to employer health coverage. It also comes at a time when the nation’s overall uninsured rate remained flat. … Roughly 276,000 more children were uninsured in 2017 than the year before, bringing the total to more than 3.9 million.”
