Atlantic: The FBI Desperately Wants to Let Trump Off the Hook (He Just Won’t Allow It)

Adam Serwer in The Atlantic: “A simple but obvious fact has been lost over the past few years, amid Trump’s direct attacks on the FBI, and liberal defenses of the FBI against those attacks: FBI agents are cops. Law-enforcement officers, including the FBI, have long been disproportionately conservative, but in the past few decades, like the rest of the nation, they have also become far more polarized by party, a reality reflected in the rhetoric and positioning of advocacy groups such as the Fraternal Order of Police. There are liberal and moderate cops, but they are not close to comprising a majority. Simply put, the FBI is full of people who would prefer not to investigate Donald Trump. He remains under federal investigation only because of his own inability to stop criming.”

Voters Are Questioning the Pols Who Don’t Question Trump

“The impact that the Mar-a-Lago issue has had is it’s raised the stakes on the unquestioning fealty of Republicans to Trump. So I don’t think they are necessarily litigating the details of Trump’s possession of super-classified documents, but voters are litigating the blind loyalty that Republicans have to President Trump and that is part of what people think about when they think about MAGA Republicans.”

— Democratic pollster Geoff Garin, quoted by the Washington Post.

Three-Quarters of GOPers Think FBI Is Trying to Undermine Trump

73%

A new Reuters/Ipsos poll finds that 73% of Republicans agreed that “members of the FBI and Department of Justice are working to delegitimize President Trump through politically motivated investigations. … The poll findings show the influence Trump wields among Republicans, who have long reserved some of their highest levels of trust for the country’s law enforcement agencies.”

Fox News Contributor Alleges FBI Plot to Assassinate Trump

“Well, I’m just saying, we don’t know what it was. When you say, ‘we’ve got to make sure that this guy doesn’t get in at all costs,’ what does that mean? So I’m saying there’s a spectrum of what does it mean, but one thing that we know for sure, is that he was plotting in an election against a candidate, and there’s FBI fingerprints all over this.”

— Fox News contributor Kevin Jackson, suggesting that “social media” sources indicate an FBI plot to assassinate President Trump, according to Media Matters.
