Author Opens Banned-Book Store in Land of Banned Books

NEA.org

Author Lauren Groff is opening a banned-book store in Gainesville, Florida, with her husband. The Lynx bookstore grand opening is set for April 28.

Groff, who made Time Magazine’s 2024 Time 100 list of the 100 most influential people in the world, is an award-winning author.

The store is liable to have no shortage of inventory, given that Florida leads the nation in book bans. In 2023 there were 33 attempts to ban or restrict books in the Sunshine State, with 2,672 titles removed from public school shelves between 2020 and 2023.

Moscow Marge Is Popular on Putin’s State TV Network

But she hates being called 'Moscow Marge'

DailyBeast.com [Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s] Tweets that labeled NATO as a useless organization and demanded the U.S. withdraw from the alliance it is currently leading were featured on state TV and described as “sensational.” Greene’s rhetoric has been interpreted by state TV host Evgeny Popov to mean that “She believes that Americans should help Putin win. Yes, you heard that right. To help him win in Ukraine.” Greene’s baseless claims that the U.S. is “supporting Nazis in Ukraine” were likewise lauded by state TV propagandists and showcased on multiple channels. Previous mockery did not deter the state-controlled media from gladly using Greene’s misleading statements to their advantage. The U.S. congresswoman was starting to become a long-distance darling for the Moscow crowd, prominently featured on state television and adored to the point that the Kremlin’s favorite propagandist Vladimir Solovyov proclaimed, “Thank goodness she exists.”

Kennedy Family Members to Endorse Biden

A message to Bobby Jr.

Boston Globe: In their sharpest rebuke yet of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., several prominent members of the Kennedy political dynasty are endorsing President Biden for reelection on Thursday, standing with the Democratic incumbent even as their relative seeks the White House this fall in a campaign that has traded on the family name. A black sheep of the powerful family for years, RFK Jr. has drawn even more explicit criticism from his relatives in the year since he launched his campaign for president, running first as a “Kennedy Democrat,” and now as a third-party candidate fighting for ballot access across the country.

The family members who are endorsing Biden include: Rory Kennedy, Kerry Kennedy, Joe Kennedy II, Beth Kennedy, Joe Kennedy III, Christopher Kennedy, Maxwell Taylor Kennedy, Vicki Strauss Kennedy, Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, Kerry Kennedy Meltzer, Max Meltzer, Ted Kennedy Jr., Stephen Kennedy Smith, Peter McKelvy, and Rebeca McKelvy. Endorsements are likely to come from Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg and Maria Shriver.

Donald Trump, Historian, on the Battle of Gettysburg

Randall Stephens did the only logical thing one could do with Donald Trump’s comments on the Battle of Gettysburg — turn them into a minute-long video with sight gags and sound effects to highlight his “very stable genius” insights and then post it to X:

Never fight uphill, me boys!

Trump with eyes closed in court

NY Times: Former President Donald J. Trump seemed alternately irritated and exhausted Monday morning, as his lawyers and prosecutors hashed out pretrial motions before jury selection in his criminal case.

Even as a judge was hearing arguments on last-minute issues in a criminal case that centers on salacious allegations and threatens to upend his bid for the presidency, Mr. Trump appeared to nod off a few times, his mouth going slack and his head drooping onto his chest.

The former president’s lead lawyer, Todd Blanche, passed him notes for several minutes before Mr. Trump appeared to jolt awake and notice them.

RFK VP Pick Nicole Shanahan Opposes IVF

Nicole Shanahan

Politico: “I’m not sure that there has been a really thorough mitochondrial respiration study on the effects of two hours of morning sunlight on reproductive health. I would love to fund something like that,” Shanahan said to a 2023 panel with the National Academy of Medicine, a group to which she had previously donated $100 million….

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s running mate has been a harsh critic of in vitro fertilization, while funding alternative research on extending women’s reproductive years.

Nicole Shanahan has for years denounced IVF — calling it “one of the biggest lies that’s being told about women’s health today.”

At the same time, she has also been a vocal proponent of and financial backer for unconventional research into the possibility of helping women having children into their 50s and exploring no-cost interventions to help women conceive, such as exposure to sunlight.

When Fascism Comes to America It Will Be Wrapped in the Flag and Carrying a Trump Bible

Axios: Few politicians have commanded the loyalty of the religious right like former President Trump, whose decision to begin selling $60 Bibles for Holy Week has outraged his critics — but drawn little reaction from evangelical leaders.

Why it matters: Trump has developed a sense of impunity when it comes to religious messaging, forged through a grand compromise with Christian conservatives who see him as a flawed — but effective — champion of their movement.

Hawking Bibles is just the latest example.

Flashback: Trump was neither a regular churchgoer nor prone to displays of faith before running for president. His 2016 campaign produced a series of memorable gaffes as he courted the GOP’s evangelical base.

  • At the Family Leadership Summit in Iowa in 2015, Trump said he had never asked God for forgiveness and called Communion his “little wine” and “little cracker.”
  • In an interview with Bloomberg the following month, Trump repeatedly refused to name his favorite Bible verse — calling it “very personal.”
  • In a speech at Liberty University in January 2016, Trump cited a verse from what he called “Two Corinthians” instead of “Second Corinthians,” drawing laughter from the crowd and mockery from his GOP rivals.

DeSantis Signs Bill Outlawing Social Media for Kids 14 and Under

Florida Times-Union

The “Free State of Florida” just got a little less free for kids 14 and under and their parents, thanks to a bill signed by presidential primary loser Ron DeSantis. If the bill goes into effect in January 2025 (and that is doubtful), it’s sure to clog up Florida courts for years. As CNN reports:

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill on Monday that will prohibit children younger than 14 from joining social media in the state. Those who are 14 or 15 will need a parent’s consent before they join a platform.

The bill, HB3, also directs social media companies to delete the existing accounts of those who are under 14. Companies that fail to do so could be sued on behalf of the child who creates an account on the platform. The minor could be awarded up to $10,000 in damages, according to the bill. Companies found to be in violation of the law would also be liable for up to $50,000 per violation, as well as attorney’s fees and court costs.

“Ultimately, [we’re] trying to help parents navigate this very difficult terrain that we have now with raising kids, and so I appreciate the work that’s been put in,” DeSantis said in remarks during the bill-signing ceremony.

Trump’s Mental Decline on Display at Ohio Rally

From the Star Spangled Banner that was intentionally and repeatedly interrupted by Donald Trump reciting lines from the Pledge of Allegiance to his inane and inappropriate salute during the anthem (proper national anthem etiquette calls for removing one’s hat and holding it in one’s right hand placed over one’s heart), his declining mental state was on full display in Ohio last Saturday.

GOP Nominee for NC Public Schools Called for Violence against Democrats, Including Executing Obama and Biden

CNN: The Republican nominee for superintendent overseeing North Carolina’s public schools and its $11 billion budget has a history marked by extreme and controversial comments, including sharing baseless conspiracy theories and frequent calls for the execution of prominent Democrats.

Michele Morrow, a conservative activist who last week upset the incumbent Superintendent of Public Instruction in North Carolina’s Republican primary, expressed support in 2020 for the televised execution of former President Barack Obama and suggested killing then-President-elect Joe Biden.
