Perry Preacher at Christian Conclave: ‘Mormonism Is a Cult’

The first real inkling that the Republican presidential primary race could devolve into a religious infighting between extreme right Christianists and Mormons — a repeat of the lowest moments of the 2008 GOP primaries — surfaced at the Values Voters Summit in Washington on Friday.

The Christian nationalist champion this time, at least for the moment, is Texas Gov. Rick Perry. The Mormons include this year’s perennial frontrunner former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney as well as former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman,

In his introduction to Perry at the values conclave, Dr. Robert Jeffress, who preaches at the First Baptist Church in Dallas, wasted no time smearing Romney’s religion:

Do we want a candidate who is skilled in rhetoric or one who is skilled in leadership? Do we want a candidate who is a conservative out of convenience or one who is a conservative out of deep conviction? Do we want a candidate who is a good, moral person — or one who is a born-again follower of the lord Jesus Christ?

Perry later tried to distance himself from Jeffress’ attack on Romney’s faith, but as he took the stage at the conclave, he thanked Jeffress for a “very powerful introduction” and then commented to the crowd that Jeffress had “knocked it out of the park.”

The paradox here is that both Jeffress and Perry are associated with a Christian dominionist cult called the New Apostolic Reformation, which advocates overthrowing all the world’s national governments, including the government of the United States, and replacing them with their own theocratic one-world government, similar to the Iranian theocracy. They are also strong believers in demons, and, in fact, believe that they are just about the only people alive today who are not possessed by demons.

That’s right. If you are reading this, and you’re not one of them, you are probably demon-possessed.

In August, Perry held a prayer meeting in Houston called “The Response.” Jeffress spoke at the event, as did numerous NAR leaders.

Jeffress also proclaimed Mormonism to be a cult during the 2008 primaries, and has called Islam an “evil” religion.

During the 2008 campaign Romney’s rival, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a former Southern Baptist preacher, described Mormonism as a satanic cult, based on a claim that the Book of Mormon describes both Jesus and Satan as God’s progeny.

Both the Values Voters Summit and Perry’s prayer meeting in August were sponsored by certified hate groups. The summit was sponsored by the Family Research Council and the American Family Association, which was also an organizer of Perry’s event. Both groups have been declared hate groups by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

This new controversy involving Perry and bigotry hits the Perry campaign in the wake reports that the Perry’s family hunting ranch in Texas was called “Niggerhead.”

  1. Has anyone else notice that every time there is racism and hatred expressed by a minister, they are Baptist? Going back, some of the early leaders of the KKK were Baptist ministers. The crazy people that protest funerals because they hate gays are Baptist. I try but cannot see the teaching of Jesus Christ in those folks. Yet they wear the bible on their sleeves but I feel that they cherry pick the passages that they use as weapons against anyone that does not agree with them. I don’t believe these folks would recognize Jesus if he came down and walked amongst them. Probably they would call him a liberal and a socialist. I’m sure the One True God will judge them properly and send them to their external rest in a very hot place.

  2. Vitordlg, AMEN! TO WHAT YOU JUST SAID! BAPTIST, are the very first to point a finger and judge other religions. If they would read and study their own Bible instead of worrying about the LDS, they would not have time to critize other religons. I know that they only pick verses to preach on and try to make them as interesting as they can, cause this was they get more MOO! LA! in their pots.

  3. Jeffers is a little PISS ANT and has forgotten the message of tolerance Jesus taught. All man made religion is a cult. Jeffers is the type of Christian who make the rest look bad. BTW, I am a Deist . . . the ONLY believe system that is NOT a Cult. But this won’t be published because they not like truth.
