Guess What Percentage of Americans Is Gay

If you guessed that 25 percent of Americans are gay, you would be wrong, but you would be in agreement with a majority of the country, according to a new poll from Gallup:

Anti-gay activists debunk assertions that 10 percent of the population is gay. They claim it’s more like 2 percent — which prompts the question: If there are so few gay people, why all the fuss?

U.S. adults, on average, estimate that 25 percent of Americans are gay or lesbian. More specifically, over half of Americans (52 percent) estimate that at least one in five Americans are gay or lesbian, including 35 percent who estimate that more than one in four are. Thirty percent put the figure at less than 15 percent.

The adult population of the United States is about 225 million. If a quarter of them were gay, that would be 56 million people — that’s a lot of gay people. That’s roughly the number of Catholics in America. No way.

The fact is, nobody really knows how many gay people there are in the United States or anywhere. The conventional wisdom used to be 10 percent, a figure that probably came from the Kinsey Report in the 1930s.

These days, anti-gay activists dispute that it’s 10 percent. They put it at 2 percent. And, as it happens, they are close, according to Gallup:

There is little reliable evidence about what percentage of the U.S. population is in reality gay or lesbian, due to few representative surveys asking about sexual orientation, complexities surrounding the groups and definitions involved, and the probability that some gay and lesbian individuals may not choose to identify themselves as such. Demographer Gary Gates last month released a review of population-based surveys on the topic, estimating that 3.5 percent of adults in the United States identify as lesbian, gay, or bisexual, with bisexuals making up a slight majority of that figure.

Out of 225 million adults, 3.5 percent is 7.8 million people.

If that’s true, it makes you wonder what all the fuss is about. Why, for example, did the 10 largest gay-hate groups feel compelled to raise $400 million to fight gay rights in 2005. Or why were anti-gay activists, including the leadership of the Mormon Church, driven to spend $40 million in 2008 to overturn marriage equality in California in 2008.

All those tens of millions to prevent small subsets of those 7.8 million people from marrying, serving in the military and other pursuits, for no other reason than their status as sinners.

You’d think Christians could find better things to do with $440 million than foment hate. You know, feed the hungry, house the homeless, heal the sick. That sort of thing.

    1. Oooh, please tell us the story of how your formerly straight friend “lost his virginity to a girl” and how that made him choose to be gay. BTW, what did you “choose?”

  1. Due to the liberal media the gay and lesbian population has been over estimated; and why not? You have a President that lies and has no regard for law, just a Marxist agenda he learned at Columbia where he worked there as a janitor. 3.5% is about right. This is all about perception and not reality. Haven’t we been in a recovery since 2010? $440 miilion was used to fight the lies and to save a society. No homosexual couple should be allowed near children let alone adopt. Now it’s time to visit Chick-a-Filet.

  2. Let’s get something straight (no pun intended.)…
Just because someone disagrees with your point of view doesn’t mean they HATE! Where are you people getting that from? So, if I’m a Democrat, I HATE Republicans? It’s just to cliche’ to call everyone a HATER, because their opionion doesn’t match yours. So just stop that. Thanks.

Another point. From my point of view, the main folks being “upset” at anyone not supporting a Gay Marriage law, are…wait for it…. STRAIGHT! This is what we call “Political Correctness”, or in the old terminology, “sympathizers”. Except now, they’re ANGRY sympathizers.

Lastly, you sympathizers are LONG-WINDED! Take a break, and chill.

I hope I’ve left you with some food for thought. So, disperse and you don’t need to thank me. I’m done.

  3. Oh, one more thing. I invite discussion.
So, go ahead and comment on my comments.

I’ll be long gone, and onto other websites by then.

  4. When I went through puberty I could not believe I was attracted to boys, but I was. I thinking homesexuality was a choice and psychological in nature was in denile and told my self “oh no I am NOT a homosexual’ but those attractions to men did not go away and by the time I was 15 I had learned the hard way and accepted it but never told anyone. When I was 25 someone told me “you have to ask Jesus Christ to come into your heart and be your Lord and Saviour and make you born again if you want to go to heaven” They did not know I was gay. I said “How do you do that?” they said just repeat this prayer after me ” Lord Jesus come into my heart, be my Lord and Saviour, make me born again, give me the grace that you provided on the cross so I can go to heaven when I die and fill me with the Holy Spirit” I said that prayer and Jesus did everything I asked him to. Thats how I found out He is real and so is his grace. It did not change my sexuality at all. So later I was doing some research about these so called verses in the bible against homesexuality. Having read the old testament 3 times and the new testament 7 times it did not seem to line up with the spirit and intention of the bible, which is to show man that anyone who accepts the grace Jesus made available on the cross(like I did when I said that prayer) goes to heaven and anyone who dose not goes to hell. I found out that in the original Hebrew of the old testament and the original greek of the new testament that those verses against homosexuality were not against homesexuality at all. They were translated that way by haters to look like they were. Aha! that is a lot more like the Jesus and God I know. The truth is 10% of most species on earth appear to be gay only mating with the same sex, and science has figured out what causes people to be gay. It is things that can happen to us in the womb combined with genes that run in families. The Old testament prophet of God David was bisexual and was married to both the kings daughter and the kings son. He kissed the kings son and got an erection the bible says. God put another male prophet of God in a relationship with another man. Two female prophets of God Ruth and Naomi were lesbians who were in a relationship with each other. Remember Jesus said dont judge others, unless you can walk miles in their shoes and that only God should judge. He also said
“Do onto others as you would have them do onto you”, and “Love your neighbor as yourself”. Let me ask you a question. In this day and age of jet airplains and the internet is’nt everyone your neighbor?

  5. Here’s the deal. And after reading all this it would seem obvious to all. Just because someone disagrees with an opinion or your way of life they are labeled as “haters”. Being able to call someone a “hater” tends to justify your position because in most of the populations eyes, hating is wrong. There are extremists in every population on both side of issues in every walk of life. As a society, this is something we will never change (unfortunately).

OK, I am now open to your reticule. Bring it on.

  6. Ted,
It is wrong to hate. Sadly, it’s all over the Bible where it teaches not to hate people…even though people use the Bible to spur hatred. Anyway, hatred towards a person is wrong.

To address your “haters” comment, it’s true. In this case, trying to oppress a group of people who aren’t harming anyone is hatred. Its not like the people talking are disagreeing about what brand of soda is best. There’s a fundamental disagreement about human rights. So yes, a person who is being oppressed is going to call the oppressor a ‘hater’. Or we can also go with ‘bigot’ if you prefer. If you truly feel a certain way, own up to it. Be proud to be a bigot, but don’t be a hypocrite saying you don’t hate when you do.

  7. Reguarding your statement “You’d think Christians could find better things to do with $440 million than foment hate. You know, feed the hungry, house the homeless, heal the sick. That sort of thing.” I think your full of crap, your way of life is unnatural and can’t produce children therefore you would not be here if your parents were gay. If 100% of America turned Gay we would be in a problem. One question How much money are the gays spending to stop Americans from expressing their freedom of speech and forcing other third world countries to accept homosexuality. Why wont they spend it to feed the hungry, house the homeless and heal the sick.

  8. 1. Not a choice,who would chose discrimination?
    2. Hate on both sides of this issue.
    3. Rights are not to be given out selectively.
4.People are born gay or straight period!
5You dont ever change orientation. You may go against your nature to try to conform. This never works for long and people get hurt.
6 Love yourself and be honest.

  9. “They claim it’s more like 2 percent — which prompts the question: If there are so few gay people, why all the fuss?”

Because in the late 70’s the gay community realized in order to gain legitimacy for their perversion they would have to re-brand their lifestyle from one governed by licentious behavior to one of social victimization.

Read “After the Ball” a book the gay mob considers their “gay manifesto for the 1990s,” the authors called for homosexuals to repackage themselves as mainstream citizens demanding equal treatment, rather than as a promiscuous sexual minority seeking greater opportunity and influence.

The real tragedy of “After the Ball” is that the great result of this is not a party, but the complete rejection of the very moral foundations which made this society possible! Their agenda is as follows:
1.) “Talk about gays and gayness as loudly and as often as possible.”
2.) “Portray gays as victims, not as aggressive challengers.”
3.) “Give homosexual protectors a just cause.”
    4.) “Make gays look good.”
5.) “Make the victimizers look bad.”
6.) “Get funds from corporate America.”

It is “militant” because it requires the demonization of anyone who doesn’t agree with their policy of forced acceptance by denigrating anyone through pejorative labeling (i.e. bigot, homophobe, etc.) as a means of discrediting their opinion or any argument against gays or the gay lifestyle and SILENCING their opposition through character assignation.

  10. As a Christian, I believe gay marriage is wrong. However, we people live in a godless society that accepts what is sinful and wrong. I am not in any position to say that gay people CAN’T marry, but I am just saying that to do so would be wrong. God’s grace extends to all people, for all people fall short of the glory of God. Allowing this kind of thing to go on would only open the door to even worse things. I only ask the leaders of America to make the right choice.

  11. The Kinsey report was wrong, yet strongly promoted by the homosexual community. The mantra became, “one in every ten.” Studies remain consistent worldwide…between one and two percent.
The hateful people I have known and observed are the immature and ignorant who are calling others “haters.”
