Poll: Whopping 65% of Wisconsin Voters Want Walker to Compromise

A new poll by a right-wing group based in Wisconsin finds nothing but bad news for the state’s GOP governor and his union-busting crusade. Despite the conservative bias of the Wisconsin Policy Research Institute, which sponsored the poll, the results clearly show that Gov. Scott Walker has lost support across the board in his campaign to end collective bargaining rights for state employee unions.

The most compelling example of eroded support for Walker may be on the question of compromise. When asked whether “Gov. Walker should stand strong for the plan he has proposed no matter how long the protests go on, OR Gov. Walker should negotiate with Democrats and public employees’ unions in order to find a compromise solution” — just 33 percent felt he should stand strong while 65 percent chose compromise.

The really bad news for Walker is in the partisan break-out, according to UW-Madison political science professor Ken Goldstein, who conducted the poll for the right-wing group:

“Not surprisingly, this is driven largely by partisan dynamics. About 77 percent of Republicans think the governor should stand strong and 94 percent of Democrats want a compromise. The key here is independents. Independents overwhelmingly want the governor to compromise with 68 percent believing he should do so and 29 percent thinking he should stand strong.”

While Walker’s approval/disapproval rating is 43/53 percent, favorable/unfavorable ratings for employee unions are 59/34 percent and teachers’ unions are at 59/36 percent.

Meanwhile, the Wisconsin Democratic senators who left the state in protest over Walker’s proposed union-busting law are denying a story published in the GOP’s Wall St. Journal propaganda outlet that they are planning to return to Madison and allow the vote to proceed, which would effectively end collective bargaining rights for public unions.

A spokesman for the Democrats claimed that the WSJ deliberately took a statement by the Dems’ Minority Leader out of context.
