GOP Continues to Spotlight White Males

Jeb Bush’s recent plea for his party to pay more attention to its Latino members seems to have fallen on deaf ears. Their selection of a white guy Midwesterner to perform the Republican rebuttal to the State of the Union address ignored rising star sunbelt Latinos, including New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio.

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) will give the speech, which according to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, will deal with economics.

“Paul Ryan has spent the better part of the last two years explaining exactly why the Democrat agenda has been so bad for jobs and the economy, and why we need to ditch the government-driven approach in favor of creative, common-sense solutions that put the American people back in charge.

Maybe Gov. Bobby Jindal’s poor showing reinforced the natural Republican inclination to stick with white guys

Republicans apparently noticed the economic crisis after the inauguration of Pres. Obama. It slipped past them when they were voting to allow Pres. George W. Bush to run up the deficit to unprecedented levels in order to wage war on a country that had not directly threatened us. They also must have been confused when they voted for Bush’s plan to spend $700 billion to bail out banks and other large corporations that had invested in mortgage-backed securities. Bush signed that Republican-approved law on Oct. 3, 2008.

Rubio, like Rep. Michele Bachmann (GOP/TEA-Minn.), plans his own State of the Union rebuttal for the benefit of his followers.

Rubio will instead deliver his own response to Floridians…He’ll put out a written statement and tape a video response when the speech is over.

Before the Ryan announcement, Rubio was considered a prime candidate for the prestigious speaking slot. It provides nationwide publicity and usually goes to a young political figure considered an up-and-comer within the party. But it also carries risk—Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal seriously hurt his prospects for national political advancement with a weak performance in 2009.

Maybe it was Jindal’s poor showing that reinforced the natural Republican inclination to stick with white guys, except when they want to prove what equal opportunity types they are. Can you say, “Michael Steele?”

Bachmann’s speech, dubbed by some as a rebuttal to the rebuttal, will no doubt be delivered with the light of crazy gleaming brightly in her eyes but will likely do little to improve her standing within the establishment GOP. Bachmann was already passed over in favor of a white guy (Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Tx.) as Republican House Conference Chair. Her appeal seems confined to hard core Tea Party members, and the GOP continues to be more comfortable with white males than the few other the inhabitants of its “big tent.”

  1. I want sincerely to thank you, Trish, for your list of facts about the Bush administration. That is all one needs to say to any wild-eyed ‘birther’ high on bathsalts or Tea Bagger…these facts will confuse them. Real facts…that is something that slows them down a bit which turns them into hand puppets. I am referring to my favorite section:

Thank you, Trish I am going to save the facts in a separate file for easy reference.

  2. I agree with Hazel.

But you forgot one more important note: G.W’s Grandpa, Prescott was a Nazi money launderer for the Union Bank of NY.

40 years of Neo-Con policy in our government from Nixon to Obama, directly influenced Bush. The former Trotskyites moved from the Democratic party to the Conservative party, redefining what it meant to be and what was to be a Conservative American.

    The rest is history…

    Sad but true
