GOP Investigated Pres. Clinton’s Cat But Only Plans ‘Oversight’ on Pres. Bush’s Admitted Illegal Spying

Compare and contrast:

  • 1995: Rep. Dan Burton (R-Ind.), then chair of the House Government Reform and Oversight Committee, investigated whether taxpayers were footing the cost of stationery and postage for the fan club dedicated to President Clinton’s cat, Socks. (They were not – and it turns out Barbara Bush’s dog Millie had a fan club too.)
  • 2005: Two weeks ago, President Bush admitted he willfully flouted a law that requires him to get warrants before wiretapping U.S. citizens. His justification for ignoring the law appears to be LÉtat, c’est moi. In reaction, Republicans in charge of the Senate Judiciary Committee announced on Friday that they are planning “oversight” hearings into the matter.

The president has admitted he broke the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) hundreds of times. Isn’t it a bit late for “oversight?”

  1. I’m hoping they just need to warm up to this inevatible impeachment and removal from office. This has come on them quite suddenly and just as they went home for the Hollidays.

  2. Let’s hear the “I” word again and again. Impeachment.

    President Bush is the Emperor with no clothes. And the “I” word finally brings that front and center. This is not an imperial society where we need to bow to the rulings of the King. Don’t be swayed by this Administration’s Talking Points. Talk is cheap. New Speak? Just like 1984, folks, and by the way, isn’t that a book they’d like to ban from the libraries? Ever wonder why???

  3. Although the wiretapping is probably the least heinous of all Bush’s crimes, it’s the one that will get him impeached (if any of them will).

    The Republicans in Congress indulge in a lot of adultery and bizarre sexual practises (nothing wrong with that) which would lose them votes. The Republicans in Congress are, for the most part, astonishingly corrupt. If Bush wiretaps them then they have to obey his every whim or be exposed.

    None of the Republicans can tolerate that, especially as Bush’s popularity plummets and Bush getting involved in an election campaign is seen as the kiss of death. So they either impeach him now or resign themselves to being puppets.

    Puppets who will be forced to repeat Amendmendment XXII of the Constitution. Naturally, the legislatures of three-fourths of the several states will be blackmailed by use of wiretap information into supporting that repeal. And then it’s hello President-for-life Dubya the 1st.

    The Gop doesn’t care about all the other damage Bush has done to the country as long as they and their rich cronies are better off. The GOP doesn’t give a damn if Joe Public’s phonecalls are monitored all day long. The GOP is ecstatic that their Democratic opponents are monitored because the information gained can be used to neutralize them. But there’s no way they’re going to sit still and let Bush turn them into puppets. They’re good at putting on a united front in public but they go their own way in private and will never give that up.

  4. For Gods sake, the American people even knew about the size and curvature of Bill Clinton’s penis, thanks to Ken Starr’s taxpayer-financed pornographic writings! And we don’t even know for certain how many times George W. Bush has been arrested, as his handlers have always evaded the question! No double standard there. No siree…..

  5. Impeached? I say prosecuted, convicted and then executed on the Winter Solstice, along with Cheney , Rumsfeld , Rice and Powell.
    Furthermore..We the People no longer need Congress, remember, it was invented to represent those who had no voice because of lack of communication..Well, we’ve got communication now!
    Mass voting by Lotto machine, phone, internet, ETC., all open-sourced software, of course

  6. THE NUMBER OF “HIGH CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS” REQUIRED FOR IMPEACHMENT?

    Democrats = 1

    ReThuglicans = ? ? (a large number approaching infinity)

  7. Can the congress people look them selves in the mirror and say that the president,GWB. did not brake the law? If thats the case then every one can ease drop on there neighbors telephone and E-mail conversations. with out it being A crime.Oh what A tangled webb we weave when first we practice to deceive. If we make him king gwb. then no law is broken.

  8. REPUBLICANS = HYPOCRISY

    Didn’t they claim they were going to bring honor and integrity back to the White House? Oh, I guess they meant the illusion of honor and integrity. They meant if no one ever investigated anything they could “just pretend” our Preznit was an honorable and honest man.

  9. Republicans set the standard for impeachment with Bill Clinton. This administration has far exceeded that standard. Makes Republicans look like horse’s asses.

  10. I can`t get to excited yet about the i word as they always get out of everything some way. What will happen willbe to late to help America with all the troubles we have hunger poor housing poor health care or none at all .But we must give the rich thier tax break

  11. –you would think he would be impeached but this administration is already above the law because the republican congress abdicated their duty to the people–be sure to vote against them in the coming election–although that has been fixed in the past–so in essence get used to monarch rule or move to canada before our king closes the borders–to protect us naturally. the constitution is dead–long live the king–God help us all.

  12. The corruption that has so thoroughly subverted the Republican Party has also spread to the Democrats. I actually hope to see some on the other side of the aisle successfully prosecuted as part of the other ongoing investigations of the Rs.

    This spying scandal, though, this is beyond mere party concerns. It’s a scary assumption of secret power by an Executive Branch already out of control.

  13. bush needs to be impeach and now this man thinks he is above the law and he is not enough is enough i am sick of him

  14. Come on! If pecker tracks are a legitimate area for Congressional investigation, that amoral cat’s behavior in our nation’s capital is certainly grist for the GOP’s mill.

  15. Anyone with at least one parent or grandparent born in Ireland can apply for citizenship and a passport. Think about it.

  16. Impeach him?! He never, ever, should’ve had enough votes for the fraud the re-elected him to take place. But hey – better late than never at all, and that’s what it’s looking like to me. Where the hell is the media in all of this?! Why, in bed with the President, of course! This is good example of why our news media can’t be allowed to be owned/run by just a few – so easy to control 5 big media congloms. If there were a draft and their kids were being sent over to die for lies, only then would we hear truthful coverage. But they pay no personal price and want those big favors handed out like Halloween candy in D.C., so don’t expect our “lapdog” media to expose any Bushy truths! Too many still think that if it was serious, TV news would cover it, so they slap a yellow ribbon and a flag on their SUVs and go on their oblivious way! Same folk who voted for the idiot — “sheeple”! Since most (not all) of Congress unwilling to do what we overpay them to do, we should offer any country who wants to press their own charges on Bush & Regime cohorts, to come get who they choose and take ’em home for trial! We’d have plenty of takers, I’m sure. Then we can work on removing almost all of both Houses of Congress – “clean house” and put in some new, grassroots folk who’d be able to relate to and represent the rest of us non-elite slobs who PAY the taxes that support this system! Let’s keep a couple of Members though – Sen. Feinstein and Rep. Waxman, for starters…they have been trying damn hard to make others do the right thing, and both know for whom they work! And no matter what party goes in, we need more of that! Oh – and no less than 3 real, viable parties – break up that “along Party lines” voting problem that screws things up!

  17. All I want to know is did Bush inhale or leave a stain somewhere? If anyone knows, please come forward & notify the FBI or CIA. This will impeach him!!!

  18. Why is Bush allowed to yet another free get out of jail pass re Slam Dunk Tenet? He gave him a medal for performing exactly as the WH wanted. Thw proof? Long after the UN Weapons inspectors found NOTHING, and Iraq was criminally invaded, and months later, no WMD were found! This gives the lie that Bush was missled by the big bad CIA. Furthermore, why was thge outright lie spread that Atta, the leader of the hijackers “met with an Iraqui Intelligence Officer in Prague”. This was totally rebutted. So where is the outcry for cramming this treasonous crap down our throats?

  19. On Bush…I hate the son-of-a-bitch to the very core of my being, to the marrow if my bones. I can only wish him a very long, slow, and painfu death, my opinion, but impeachment? It’ll never happen. There are too many people in this country as ignorant or more ignorant than Bush. They are in the majority. Consequently impeachment will never happen; and that, is truely a sad commentary on this country.

  20. There is no prospect of impeachment at this time, but if the electorate is careful to force vote accountability, the 2006 mid-terms could lead to executions enough to satisfy even the bloodthirstiest of the Repugnants – albeit, OF those very Repugnants.

  21. forget impeachment… if an investigation was conducted as to whether taxpayer money was used for Socks’s fan club, then I want an investigation as to whether any of my tax money went toward the production and distribution of that stupid Barney/Mrs. Beazley video. Now, THAT was a crime.

  22. “The corruption that has so thoroughly subverted the Republican Party has also spread to the Democrats.”

    Um, OK, if you say so.
